Chicken Leather
I've been looking for something specific and can't find it. Part of the problem might be that I'm not sure how to define my search. Searching CHICKEN LEATHER returns some documents but they aren't exactly what I want. I'm hoping to find information on tanning chicken pelts with the feathers still on. I know it has to be there; maybe as part of the taxidermy body of knowledge. Searching on LEATHER AND FEATHER returned a lot of hits, some of them pretty weird. (I need to be more careful searching at work.) Finally, running CHICKEN PELT and FEATHERS turned up exactly what I expected — nothing!

I've been following up the taxidermy leads. There are some interesting products used to tan bird skins and leave the feathers on although the standard practice is to treat the skins with borax. The borax works to preserve the skin as well as act as an insect repellant. The problem is that none of these processes leaves the pelt with the resilience or strength we normally associate with leathers.
My original interest is in binding books with chicken feather covers. I suppose a stiff pelt could be used for the covers with something else being used for the spine and hinges.
Here, also from the Wasco site but this time the Taxidermy.net comes an answer.
